The day Al heard that the Ed Hall directed Chariots of Fire was playing in the West End over the summer he asked me to book tickets-
We added in a Ben requested trip to Hamleys -
(yu-gi-oh cards and a remote controlled hexbot)
then walked down Regent Street to the Guildgud Theatre -
where our early booking meant that we had great seas on the front row of the balcony.
The play was so cleverly staged -
with a stadium on the stage - a running tracking around the stalls -
and a double revolve meaning that the races were run a full pelt.
The choreographed movement sections were astonishing
(reminding me of the fantastic Black Watch )
And the singing (Gilbert and Sulliven and a final chorus of Jerusalem) excellent.
Megs and Ben were both transfixed - and Ben was keen to recreate the action!
Then it was a very crowded Tube (with a very happy conductor announcing the Womens Team Time Trial Gold over the tannoy) to Stratford
The station was as close as we got to the stadium on the astonishing night of 3 gold medals -
(though my friend June happily instagrammed shots from inside the stadium)
- but at least we were back at Plover Cottage in time to catch the TV coverage!
